SACRAMENTO — Assembly Republicans offered the following remarks at today’s press availability in response to Governor Newsom’s proposed redistricting plan. Video of the remarks is available for use here.
Assembly Republican Leader James Gallagher: “Every state in the nation should have an independent redistricting process. It should be the case in Texas, and it should be the case here.”
“The voters are on our side. We believe that at the end of the day, the voters want to keep fair and independent elections. They don’t want politicians drawing their own lines.”
Assemblymember Carl DeMaio: “What’s happening in this building is pure corruption. It is illegal, it is unfair.”
“We now have evidence that three sitting legislators have traded their vote for a seat in Congress with this corrupt deal. This is vote rigging happening inside our legislature. It’s absolutely corrupt to the core.”
“Most Californians learned from their mom or in kindergarten that two wrongs don’t make a right,” said in response to mid-decade redistricting occurring in Texas.
Assemblymember Alexandra Macedo: “We are not backing down from this fight. We will fight back. We will defeat this. If it’s not here at the Capitol, it will be in a courtroom, or it will be at the ballot box.”
Assemblymember David Tangipa: “California voters already spoke. They said we want our districts to be in an independent, fair commission. It’s not our job to act to what other states are doing, it’s our job to do better.”
