California Defies Federal Civil Rights Order, Risks Billions to Keep Biological Males in Girls’ Sports

State refuses to comply with Title IX ruling, putting girls’ sports and school funding in jeopardy.

SACRAMENTO — In a dangerous rebuke of federal civil rights law, the California Department of Education (CDE) announced it will not follow a directive from the U.S. Department of Education, which found the state violated Title IX by allowing biological males to compete in girls’ sports.

Assembly Republicans blasted the move, calling it an outrageous act of defiance that places girls’ athletics and critical school funding at risk.

“California continues to push the dangerous insanity of letting men compete in women’s sports,” said Assembly Republican Leader James Gallagher (East Nicolaus). “This is about fairness, safety, and the rule of law. Superintendent Thurmond and Governor Newsom are jeopardizing school sports programs across the state, all to appease a radical agenda and advance their political careers.”

“Newsom’s Department of Education is blatantly violating Title IX — and now they’re doubling down,”
said Assemblywoman Kate Sanchez (R–Temecula). “They refuse to protect girls’ sports for biological girls. It’s a shocking civil rights violation that could cost California billions in federal education funding.”

Assembly Republicans demand that Governor Newsom immediately reverse course and direct the Department of Education to comply with federal law before irreparable harm is done to student-athletes and schools.
