California Assembly Republican Caucus
SACRAMENTO – During today’s floor session of the California Assembly, Republican lawmakers will force a vote on Assembly Bill 12, to stop the Newsom administration’s “Hidden Gas Tax” increase that is set to raise gas prices by as much as 65 cents per gallon. The update to the state’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard was rubber stamped last fall by Newsom’s Air Resources Board, and backed by 54 Assembly Democrats when they stopped an effort to prevent the price spike.
Recently, the state Office of Administrative Law rejected the new rule because it lacked clarity and was adopted with an incorrect procedure, however Newsom’s bureaucrats have announced they intend to re-submit the mandate with minor changes.
California gas prices are the highest in the nation, having spiked nearly 40 cents in just the last month.
While Newsom claims to have won multiple “victories” against “gas price gouging,” California drivers currently pay $1.70 per gallon more than the national average. This California surcharge has increased 29 cents from when the governor “brought Big Oil to their knees” in March 2023 and is up 62 cents from when Newsom took office in January 2019.
