California Assembly Republican Caucus
“It’s time for lawmakers to stop standing by as fentanyl traffickers kill hundreds of Californians each month.”
SACRAMENTO – Tuesday, September 5, during Assembly Floor Session, Republicans will force a vote to advance Alexandra’s Law, which would require convicted fentanyl traffickers to receive a warning that fentanyl can kill and if they continue selling the drug and cause a death, they could face homicide charges. Tuesday will mark the three-month anniversary of the introduction of Assembly Constitutional Amendment 12, which would put Alexandra’s Law before the voters; since it was introduced, ACA 12 has been stalled by Democrats in the Assembly Rules Committee.
“The supermajority has slow-walked every effort to enforce real consequences on those causing the fentanyl crisis. Enough is enough,” said Assemblymember Diane Dixon (R-Newport Beach). “The time for study committees and delay tactics is over. It is time to finally do something to hold traffickers accountable.”
Immediately following the vote, Republican lawmakers will hold a media availability at the rear of the Assembly Chamber. Family members of fentanyl victims will also be available for interviews.
“It’s time for lawmakers to stop standing by as fentanyl traffickers kill hundreds of Californians each month,” said Matt Capelouto, whose daughter Alexandra died of fentanyl poisoning and inspired ACA 12. “We know this bill will save lives by dissuading fentanyl dealers from continuing to sell poison. The legislature has an obligation to act.”
