MEDIA ADVISORY: Assembly Republicans, Law Enforcement & Crime Victims to Call for Stiffer Sentences for Gun, Gang Crimes & End to Early Release

SACRAMENTO – Tomorrow, Assembly Republicans, law enforcement representatives and advocates for victims of crime will hold a press conference calling for stiffer sentences for gun and gang crimes and an end to the early release of violent felons.

WHAT: Press conference calling for the restoration of gang and gun enhancements, higher penalties for felons in possession of firearms, and an end the California’s early release policy that puts criminals back on the street after serving just a fraction of their sentence.

WHO: Assembly Republican Leader James Gallagher (Yuba City); Assemblywoman Suzette Valladares (R-Santa Clarita); Assemblywoman Laurie Davies (R-Laguna Niguel); Topo Padilla, Crime Victims United; Yuba County Sheriff Wendell Anderson

WHEN: Thursday, April 7, 8:30am

WHERE: California State Capitol, North Steps

WHY: Soaring violent crime and the revelation that a suspect in this weekend’s Sacramento shooting had been released early from a 10-year prison sentence show that the soft-on-crime policies of the last decade aren’t working. California’s murder rate rose by 30% in 2020, followed by a 16% increase in California’s biggest cities during the first nine months of 2021. Seventy-eight percent of Californians say crime has risen statewide, 65% say it has increased in their area.

The event will be livestreamed on the Assembly Republicans’ Facebook page
