Assembly Democrats Affirm Support for New Mileage Tax on Drivers

Lawmakers advance AB 1421 (Wilson) and  reject amendment to block per-mile driving tax.

SACRAMENTO — The California State Assembly advanced AB 1421 (Wilson), a proposal that could result in double taxation for California drivers. The bill advances efforts to impose a new mileage-based tax on top of the more than 60-cent gas tax.

Republicans offered amendments to prohibit local governments from charging drivers for every mile they travel. Assembly Democrats rejected the amendments, making it clear they intend to impose a new tax increase on Californians that could punish everyday commuters.

“Californians are already getting crushed by the cost of food, housing, power, and gas,” said Assembly Republican Leader Heath Flora.

“We already pay the highest gas taxes in the nation. Now Sacramento is talking about adding a new tax for every mile people drive. Piling on another tax right now shows just how out of touch politicians in Sacramento are with the reality working families face,” Flora continued.
