Newsom Hides Behind Letter, Dodges Reality in ‘State of the State’

On statehood’s 175th anniversary, Newsom skips tradition and skips accountability. Republicans call him out for ignoring deficits, affordability, and California’s real problems.

SACRAMENTO — Governor Gavin Newsom marked California’s 175th anniversary of statehood not with a speech to the Legislature, but with a prerecorded video and a letter, avoiding direct questions about the affordability crisis, a looming multi-billion-dollar budget deficit, and Medi-Cal’s financial collapse.

Instead of appearing before the Legislature to speak directly to the people, Newsom once again sidestepped accountability. Assembly Republican Leader James Gallagher (R–East Nicolaus) issued the following statement in response:

“Every year, the governor is supposed to give a State of the State speech to the Legislature. But instead of standing before us, Gavin Newsom is sending a letter. I guess he’s too afraid to come and actually talk about what the state of the state really is — like the fact that we’re broke and running huge deficits.

This governor refuses to do anything about homelessness. He’s done nothing to address our affordability crisis.

Have utility costs gone down? No.

Have gas prices gone down? No.

All these things the governor continues to ignore. Why? Because he’s running for president.

Well, we’ve had enough. It’s time for this Legislature to stand up for itself and say:

No more, governor. We actually need to solve problems, and we need someone who’s actually going to work for the best interests of Californians.

Stop the insults. Stop refusing to show up and actually do the work of being a governor.

Otherwise, get out and stop wasting all of our time, and most importantly, stop making it worse for everyday Californians in this state.”
